A City Worth Bidding On
For a few weeks in June, when schools were nearing the end-of-the-year finish line, New York City's arts, sports, entertainment, and cultural communities came together around a simple idea: celebrate everything that makes this city extraordinary while opening more doors for the young people who call it home to explore.
That idea became Only in NY, Situation Project's inaugural virtual auction in partnership with Charitybuzz.
A City Built on Shared Experiences
New York has never been defined by a single institution. It is the city where a Broadway curtain rises just a few blocks from a baseball stadium. Where world-class opera, neighborhood festivals, museums, concerts, and exhibits all become part of someone's NYC story. For millions of visitors, those experiences are unforgettable. However, for many young New Yorkers growing up in local neighborhoods with limited arts access, they can remain out of reach.
Situation Project was founded on the belief that geography and socioeconomic status should not determine whether a young person experiences live theatre, dance, music, museums, or cultural institutions. For more than a decade, the organization has partnered with schools and community organizations across New York City to introduce students to the arts that thrive in their own “backyard”.
During the summer months, when school is out, many arts-based opportunities become less accessible, particularly for families in under-resourced communities. The inaugural Only in NY auction created another way to address that challenge. Not simply by raising funds, but by inviting more people into the mission.
The Best of New York, Together
Throughout June, supporters logged onto Charitybuzz to bid on experiences that simply did not exist anywhere else. The auction featured more than ten one-of-a-kind opportunities donated by organizations that help define New York City.
Winning bidders secured packages including field-level seats at a New York Yankees game, a luxury suite with the Staten Island FerryHawks, an evening at the Metropolitan Opera, a VIP Rockefeller Center experience, iconic moments with Broadway productions including Disney's The Lion King and Wicked, and even a behind-the-scenes tour of the Playbill printing facility. The place where one of theatre's most recognizable publications begins its journey before arriving in audiences' hands.
Each package celebrated a different corner of the city's cultural identity. Collectively, they told a larger story about what becomes possible when organizations that serve different audiences unite around a common purpose.
As bids climbed during the auction's closing hours, friendly competition became part of the excitement. Supporters weren't simply bidding on memorable experiences. They were investing in future ones. Every winning bid helps Situation Project continue opening doors to arts and cultural experiences for New York City students and families throughout the year.

More Than a Winning Bid
While every auction has winners, the stories that emerged afterward proved that the experiences themselves carried meaning far beyond their market value.
Some winners plan to use their packages to celebrate milestone birthdays. Others are welcoming loved ones visiting New York City for the first time, wanting to share the city through distinctly New York experiences. One family chose an experience to honor the memory of someone they’ve recently lost, creating space for celebration alongside shared grief.
One of the goals behind Only in NY was not simply to raise funds, but to expand the community awareness surrounding the work. The auction brought together longtime supporters of Situation Project with people discovering the organization for the first time. Every new bidder became someone who learned about Situation Project's mission, its students, and its belief that arts access creates immense impact.
The experiences became invitations, not only into New York's cultural institutions, but into a growing community of people who believe those institutions belong to everyone.
Building Something That Lasts
Launching an inaugural event always comes with lessons. Situation Project views this first edition of Only in NY as the beginning of something larger. The enthusiasm from participating organizations, the energy surrounding the bidding, and the stories shared by winners all point toward an opportunity to grow the auction in the years ahead.
Just as importantly, the initiative highlighted something that has always been true about New York. The city's greatest strength is its willingness to come together.
Sports organizations, performing arts institutions, Broadway productions, cultural landmarks, and local businesses all contributed experiences that reflected their own identities while supporting shared values. Together, they built something that celebrated the very best of the city.
That spirit mirrors the work Situation Project does every day. Arts access is never the result of a single organization. It depends on schools, teaching artists, cultural institutions, donors, volunteers, and communities all choosing to open doors together.
The auction may have ended, but the experiences are just beginning. And each one will carry forward the same idea that inspired the auction from the start: the best thing about New York has always been the people who choose to share it.
